What to do in Newport
Working in Newport
Ranked the seventh fastest growing economy in the UK, Newport is Wales’ third largest city.
Shaped by the docks that were developed around the mouth of the River Usk, the city’s industrial past is still visible today. However the aesthetics, economy and city are fast transforming, thanks to an extensive regeneration programme.
The Civil Services is the largest employer in the city. However, the biggest growth has been in the financial services field: Newport is home to HSBC General Insurance, Admiral and Lloyds TSB – the city’s largest private employer. The educations sector is also experiencing a boost, with The University of Wales at Newport opening a new £35 million campus opening in the city in January 2011.
